Sluts unite!

The "SlutWalk" concept originated in Toronto, inspired by a police officer's remark that "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized". The first SlutWalk was held on April 3 in that city, a protest march of women asserting their right to wear whatever they wanted -- and dressed to drive home the point. Despite the predictable hand-wringing and pearl-clutching from both feminist and anti-feminist wings of the junior anti-sex league, the protests have spread to several cities and countries, an eye- catching declaration that dressing provocatively or even being a "slut" does not make one a legitimate target of sexual violence.

On Sunday, July 31, Portland held its own SlutWalk. How could I not go?

There was a rally before the march (click on pictures for bigger versions):

The march set off around 2:30.

There was a police escort (not shown). I guess that's why permits for something like this cost about $2,000.

The march took some minutes to pass. I'm not good at estimating numbers, but I'd guess there were several hundred to a thousand participants.

SlutWalk was definitely the ladies' day, but a fair number of male supporters also turned out.

Howdy Infodell! ... and interesting read from Toronto and link's ... I didnt even know of the walk in Dallas, but it appear's that it was April 23rd, so it's gone fer this year I reckon. But ... great that you could attend, and of course give any support that popped up as well, if the case. It sounded a tad odd though coming from a Toronto cop as far as telling gal's not to dress "slutty" or whatever, I mean ... most big city cop's (and I consider Toronto as just like USA, it's just right across from Buffalo, NY, great btown by the way, loved attending the Younge St mall summer free concert's) will instruct sensitivity term's/ word's ... in this case the cop should use the term "provocative wear" or whatever politipop term they use. It kind of remind's me of the problem's (I'm sure your aware of) in some western Euro countries in recent year's from muslim immigrant's who tried to legally justify their urge to rape Euro women, because they dressed like "slut's" or "whore's", and actually trying to use that as "defense" to motion acquittal for their alleged sex crime's. Then I have to ask myself ... "what is slut dressing?" which is different to so many ... it is a term/ word that seem's to have a very broad meaning ... I have seen professional women for instance, such as the gal who was sueing the bank she worked at in NYC that I posted on for discrimination because they (Deborah Loranzano ... spelling?) I done a double posting on, she just couldnt wear any damn thing, whether it's a business suit or a dress without being accused of "distracting her male co- worker's" with what I termed as her "ASSet's". But anywayz, great to see you had fun and was able to contribute in some way (in PDX, and WOW! ... what great looking gal's in PDX too, that I seen, I almost broke my neck just spinning my head around walking down the street! :) ... I wonder if there is a "male" equivalent term of/ for slut? What would a male be called who dresses like such? is what I mean.

I'm sorry, her name of who I was referring to is "Debralee Lorenzana" ... but her story was remarkable on this subject, is why I took interest in it. Here you had a professional woman, who was kept in lower paying title's, and when she questioned promotion's she didnt get that she was promised, they fired her for her dressing, she was shafted to the max, and even got complaint's from her new employer (large banker) to not do any talk/ interview's while off the clock on her own time, or be fired as well. She wore proper business suit's, and was told that those were even "too revealing", to the point of insanity, basically not being able to wear a damn thing that was termed "proper". Link below, and you commented on at least one of these.

Oop's ... sorry that link dont work and this happen's time to time on comment's boxes including mine, the "h" in her name didnt print properly and cant be read basically, and I mispelled her name w/o the "h" in my paragraph, it's "Debrahlee". Truely though a railroading story they pulled on this poor gal.

But this other way to cut and paste below should work possibly.

I think you mean this (click here).

I'm sure the Toronto police department does what it can, but there are bad apples in every barrel. It would be interesting to know if he's re-thought what he said, after it inspired an international protest movement.

Thanx on the "link" deal, I tried that on the comment's thing before as far as "highlighting" and it didnt work for me, but never got around to trying again ... yet ... I'm more behind than Washington on getting shit done dude.

But back to my question in my last comment's ... Is there some term/ word/ equivalent for the male gender as far as the term "slut"? I mean, have you ever heard of any? I cant recall any off hand, but figure there probably is. Perhap's something like "Smut's"(?) I know how dumb that must sound, but I just woke up and for some reason, when I wake up I start thinking silly shit and sometime's laugh about nothing.

I would think the cop did re- think that. If I was his commanding officer, I would have assigned his ass to a week in personel/ file's in some back room, or watching a parking lot on 3rd shift of a store that's closed, that would wake his ass up!

Well, there are various terms like "skirt-chaser", but nothing as derogatory as "slut". "Slut" derives from the old one-way world-view in which the male's role is to pursue sex and the female's is to give it to him or not. "Giving" under any but a narrow set of circumstances was seen as disreputable. In that view of things, there could be no male equivalent.

I've always used the term slut gener-neutrally. A guy who sleeps around indiscriminatley with no regard for the consequences.

I'll bet the mainstream news media was in a snit about this story... they would have LOVED to cover it but there is no way they could refer to it on the air using the term "slut". Oh the humanity!

Uzza: Good point. The guys who were in the march seemed to be claiming the title.

RtS: I think if they say "SlutWalk" with a sort of quizzical and pained look, they can get away with it.
